You should avoid dropping ANY watch, but you should be particularly careful to not drop a watch with a ceramic case. It seems like the overall consensus is that the case is very tough, but it's arch nemesis is a tall fall onto a hard surface. The best solution I have found for traveling is the new Patek H997 Travel Case (not sure if other brands have them also). It’s small, well built and offers great protection for these works of wonder. Only thing that changed after WWII, is that the Swiss movement companies (like Omega, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Longines, etc.) started getting into the act. The genuine Omega comes packaged in a sealed, 2 part, thick plastic pouch with a movement retaining ring in the 2nd compartment. The other case doesn’t include a retaining ring. Many SMDV presentation watches can be found on eBay, sometimes featuring a custom dial in addition to the usual engraving on the back. Early SMDV models featuring only 'Seamaster' on the dial display the coat hanger 'S' in 'Seamaster'. Then we have the maker’s ID, the Omega triangle (which does not appear on Dennison cases until 1953), the hallmark for the Birmingham assay office, the initials A.L.D. and then something unusual. Is the only way to take measurements of the movement using digital calipers or can you identify caliber etc from the above information.
